‘Up in the Air’ actress Vera Farmiga will star in A&E’s ‘Bates Motel,’ a new series inspired by Alfred Hitchcock‘s classic 1960 film ‘Psycho.’

The Oscar-nominee will play Norma Louise Bates, Norman Bates’ mother, in the ‘Psycho’ prequel.

A&E describes ‘Bates Motel’ as “a contemporary exploration of the formative years of Norman Bates’ relationship with his mother, Norma, and the world they inhabit. Viewers will have access to the dark, twisted backstory and learn firsthand how Norma helped forge the most famous serial killer of them all.”

Alfred Hitchcock has had a resurgence recently, with two new films about his life and films in the works.

Sienna Miller stars in the upcoming HBO film ‘The Girl,’ about the director’s obsessive relationship with muse Tippi Hedren. Anthony Hopkins also plays Hitchcock in the upcoming film ‘Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho,’ co-starring Helen Mirren and Scarlett Johanssen.

Carlton Cuse of ‘Lost’ and Kerry Ehrin of ‘Friday Night Lights’ shares the duties of executive producer on ‘Bates Motel.’

Farmiga recently appeared in ‘Safe House’ alongside Denzel Washington.
