The No.1 Christmas single in the UK has been announced.

The Military Wives Choir, led by Gareth Malone, have taken the top-spot in the UK this festive season.

The group’s debut single, ‘Wherever You Are’, beat out a range a powerhouse winter releases including ‘Paradise’ by Coldplay and this year’s X-Factor winners single, ‘Cannonball’ by Little Mix, in the race to the Christmas No.1 Spot.

Selling 556,000 copies in the last week, the choir sold more records than the rest of the top-10 combined.

The Military Wives Choir was formed by Choirmaster and Broadcaster Gareth Malone for BBC reality TV series, The Choir.

Comprised of the wives and partners of active members of the British military, the group won the series and the opportunity to perform at the Royal Albert Hall earlier this year.

All proceeds from the single will be donated to the Royal British Legion, a charity dedicated to looking after the well-being of British armed servicemen and their families.

In a statement, Malone said: “This is so surreal. Who would have guessed in those first rehearsals that we could take Christmas Number 1… It’s testament to the Military Wives’ hard work and the nation’s support of them, as well as the power of choral singing.”

Special mention must go to YouTube sensation Alex Day, who took the No.4 Spot in the Christmas chart with his single ‘Forever Yours‘.
