Punk/New Wave band Devo, will release a new song, called “Don’t Roof Rack Me, Bro! (Seamus Unleashed),” just one day before the Republican National Convention.

The title of the song is a dig at GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney in reference to the much-publicized 1983 incident in which Romney transported his family dog Seamus on the roof rack of his station wagon during a 12-hour drive to Canada.

Devo, best know for the 1980 hit “Whip It” recently launched a “Save Seamus” website selling shirts and other items featuring images of the Irish setter. Band member and songwriter Gerald Casale said that a portion of the proceeds would go to no-kill shelters.

Casale said that although he donated money to the president’s 2008 campaign, the song was not written as an endorsement of Barack Obama.

“You just don’t get the sense that there’s a heart inside Romney,” Casale said. “There is still to me a difference between the two of them, and the difference is mostly about character of the man.”

Devo’s critique of Romney comes on the heals of rock bands Twisted Sister and Rage Against the Machine denouncing Romney’s running mate, Paul Ryan.

“Seamus Unleashed” will be released via iTunes on Sunday, which is also National Dog Day.
