Former Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron appears to have gained more fame from television evangelism than acting at this stage.

Frequently appearing in religious television and films, Cameron appeared on the Today Show Tuesday morning, appearing to defend Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin.

Akin recently caught flame for his now notorious remarks on rape, claiming that women could not get pregnant from what he called “legitimate rape.” Since his remarks, Akin has apologized for his error, but has refused to step out of the senate race in Missouri, despite his constituents urging that he do so.

During his spot on the morning talk show, Cameron claimed that Akin is “a man who is advocating the sanctity of life through and through. He said he misspoke, and he apologized for it. I like to evaluate people based on their entire life, their entire career, all they stand for.”

Cameron’s appearance on the show was to promote his upcoming documentary Monumental, which Akin had participated in. He had also defended him in a CNN interview, saying: “You know, he clearly is a pro-life advocate, and for that, I respect him.”
