A paparazzi photograph portraying an emaciated Steve Jobs has surfaced on the web.

The photo, which was supposedly taken less than an hour before it was sold to celebrity gossip website TMZ, depicts the frail former Apple CEO requiring support from a companion in the early hours of this morning.

Wearing a knee length black gown at an undisclosed location in California, many have expressed surprise at the state of Apple’s Chairman of the Board just two days after he stood down as CEO.

The Silicon Valley powerhouse announced Wednesday that he would be stepping down as Apple’s CEO, much to the dismay of Apple fans across the globe. Former Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook will take the reigns as Apple CEO going forward.

Job’s health has been the subject of much speculation over the past few years, following a bout with pancreatic cancer and a subsequent liver transplant.

He has been consistently loosing weight for almost seven years now, but many have expressed shock at seeing the innovator in this state. However, the authenticity of the photo has yet to be confirmed.

Many have lashed out at TMZ for publishing the photo, with CNET TV host Brian Tong tweeting: “Leave Steve Jobs alone @TMZ. You guys are as low as you can go. This is what’s called “journalism” these days. Seriously disgusted.”

The photo can be found on TMZ if you care – Instead of publishing a photo of a great man at his worst, we’ll leave you with a quote from the man himself:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” – Steve Jobs
