Beyoncé played a role in setting a new Twitter record after announcing that she was pregnant during the VMAs.

The social networking website recorded a peak of 8,868 tweets per second during pop diva’s performance at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday.

At the beginning of her performance she said on stage, “I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside of me,” hinting at her pregnancy. A few perceptive tweeters got the hint and started a small increase in Twitter activity. This follows an earlier increase in twitter activity as she officially announced she was pregnant before the VMAs, showing her baby bump to photographers.

The largest surge in tweets came immediately after Beyonce rubbed her belly, confirming to viewers that she was pregnant. The camera then panned to Kanye West, who was congratulating her husband, Jay-Z in the audience.

Jay-Z is said to be “ecstatic” about his wife’s pregnancy. A friend told US Weekly: “They barely told anyone… They kept it secret until they were sure, and now she simply couldn’t wait to tell the world.”

The last record for the most tweets per second came after Japan won the Women’s World Cup in July – More than 7,000 tweets per second were recorded during the sporting event.
