Since Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have separated and pursued a divorce, their filmmaking endeavors have largely suffered. This is especially true of Angelina, who hasn’t been seen on the screen, since 2015’s By the Sea, though she did voice a character in last year’s Kung Fu Panda 3. Now, Ms. Jolie reveals a desire to get back to work with a project that will be especially appealing to her younger fans.
Angelina Jolie is Finally Giving us a Maleficent Sequel
For awhile, it seemed Angelina Jolie was going to give up acting for directing, but she now reveals that she’ll be returning to work as an actress. Joking that becoming the primary breadwinner for her family has forced her back to work, Ms. Jolie revealed that work is already underway for a sequel to the highly successful Maleficent film, suggesting Disney is still eager to proceed with the franchise.
“We have been working on the script and this is going to be a really strong sequel,” Ms. Jolie promised.
The first film, released in 2014, was both a box office and critically acclaimed hit, earning $750 million worldwide. It is also noteworthy for featuring Angelina’s daughter, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, as a young version of Sleeping Beauty.
Angelina Jolie Needed to be with her Children
Her time away from the screen has been essential, explains Ms. Jolie. The year away from work was spent dealing with her divorce and providing her children with the support they needed in the wake of the split. She says she wanted to make sure the children weren’t uprooted more than necessary by the separation and the ensuing court battles.
“I’ve taken over a year off now, because of my family situation, to take care of my kids.”
Between custody battles, parenting duties, and her humanitarian obligations, the past year has been a somber time for Angelina Jolie. For that reason, the actress says she’s very interested in getting to work on something fun and fantastical, like this Disney project. As much for herself as for her own children and her fans, Jolie says she’s looking forward to having fun on the set.
“I look forward to having some fun with that,” says the Maleficent star.
Angelina Jolie’s next directorial endeavor comes with Netflix’s First They Killed My Father, which will be available for streaming on September 15.
