Amnesty International’s fundraising extravaganza, The Secret Policeman’s Ball is moving State Side to New York’s Radio City Music Hall to celebrate the charity’s 50th anniversary.
British acts including Coldplay, Mumford & Sons and Russell Brand will cross the Atlantic to perform the sought after gig. American comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are also confirmed to appear.
Since its formation by British comedian John Cleese in 1976, the music and comedy event has never taken place outside of the UK.
Discussing the move, Amnesty International spokesmen Andy Hackman said: “For us, it’s iconic and a very special thing and has provided the opportunity to really celebrate the presence of freedom of expression and free speech, and how we can move people and how we can bring people together, and just how powerful that it.”
In accordance with Amnesty International’s ethos, The Secret Policeman’s Ball intends to stand up for humanity and human rights. Suzanne Nossel, Amnesty International’s USA executive director emphasized; “On March 4 those of us who can make fun of our government and walk away in safety will dedicate the program to those who cannot.”
World-renowned talents such as Phil Collins, Rowan Atkinson and Eric Clapton have supported the cause in the past.
